A Toronto Man Is Accused Of Scamming A 73-Year-Old Woman Out Of $250,000 By Posing As A Middle Eastern Company Owner

A 26-year-old man from Toronto has been charged in connection with an online romance scam that unfortunately led to a 73-year-old woman losing $250,000 in cryptocurrency.

In September 2022, a man named Chimezie Nwabueze reportedly connected with the victim on an online dating website. From there, they engaged in daily communication through text messages and phone calls.

Nwabueze stands accused of impersonating a business owner, claiming to run an oil rig in the Middle East, and desperately seeking financial assistance. He made a commitment to reimburse the victim and proposed the idea of a future face-to-face meeting. Nevertheless, the duo never had the chance to meet in person, and their interactions were limited to the online realm.

Upon coming across a media report about romance scams, the victim had a sudden realization that she had fallen victim to a scam. At this point, she had already transferred around $250,000 in cryptocurrency to the suspect.

After this realization, Peel Regional Police launched an investigation that ultimately resulted in the execution of a search warrant at Nwabueze’s residence in Toronto.

As part of the investigation, law enforcement confiscated valuable jewelry, a high-end car, and money connected to the crimes.

Nwabueze is facing multiple charges, which include fraud exceeding $5,000, two counts of possessing property obtained through illegal means, uttering forged documents, and identity fraud.

He was granted release on an undertaking and is expected to make a court appearance on December 11, 2023. Currently, there have been no additional updates released regarding his court appearance.
