In 2024 A New Florida Bill Will Make It Illegal For Drivers To Stay In The Left Lane Driving Under 65 MPH

According to the proposed bill, drivers would not be allowed to drive in the leftmost lane or on a road with two or more lanes and a speed limit of at least 65 mph, unless:

  • You are overtaking and passing another vehicle
  • You’re about to exit the road, street or highway
  • You’ve been directed to by law enforcement or an official traffic control device

Exceptions to this rule include emergency, maintenance, and construction vehicles. Drivers will still have the option to use the left lane when necessary to navigate around road obstructions.

What if the left lane is marked for high-occupancy (HOV) use?

The lane immediately to the right of the high-occupancy (HOV) lane or designated turn lane is the furthermost left lane.

How much would you be fined for driving in the left lane if the bill passes?

The bill proposes implementing fines of up to $158 for non-criminal moving violations.
