Gaston Glock, the Austrian engineer who created the iconic Glock handgun, passed away on Wednesday. His invention has gained popularity among various groups, including national security forces, law enforcement officials, and gun enthusiasts worldwide. He lived to the impressive age of 94.
The Glock company announced his passing on its website. No additional information was provided in their statement.
The Glock is a ubiquitous presence, seen in tragic events and intense confrontations, portrayed in the glitz and glamour of Hollywood films, showcased in gripping television dramas, carried by individuals with malicious intent, and trusted by a significant majority of America’s law enforcement officers as well as security personnel in nearly 50 nations. It receives high praise from gangsta rappers, its distinctive shape is displayed at airports, and it remains a central topic in gun-control discussions.
The creator of this was quite elusive, being a billionaire who owned his own company and resided in a luxurious estate on the shores of a lake in Austria. He was surrounded by a team of guards, lawyers, financiers, and servants. His appearances in the news were few and far between. In 1999, he made headlines when he bravely defended himself against an attempted attack by a business associate. Then, in 2011, at the age of 82, he surprised many by divorcing his wife and marrying a woman 51 years his junior. Finally, in 2012, a book titled “Glock: The Rise of America’s Gun” by Paul M. Barrett brought him back into the spotlight.
