Starting January 1st, 2024 When Pulled Over, California Police Can No Longer Ask Drivers “Do You Know Why I Pulled Over?”

Potentially millions of California drivers have been asked the same simple question by an officer after being pulled over: “Do you know why I pulled you over?”

Beginning in January 2024, officers will be required to state the purpose of the traffic stop before asking any other questions, changing the way they initiate interactions. Similarly, this applies to any stops made on a pedestrian.

Here are the latest traffic and vehicle-related laws that will be implemented in California starting in 2024.

In the fall of 2022, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed AB 2773, which will go into effect on Jan. 1.

As per the law, officers are only allowed to forego stating the reason for the stop if they believe it is necessary to safeguard life or property from an imminent threat.

Its purpose is to minimize the occurrence of “pretextual stops,” where an officer pulls over a vehicle or pedestrian for a minor infraction in order to conduct a search for evidence of a more serious crime, such as expired documents or illegal possessions.

California will be implementing new firearms-related laws starting in 2024 and in the following years.

The law was designed to promote peaceful interactions between law enforcement and civilians.

During a legislative committee hearing, Assembly member Chris Holden expressed the intention behind the bill as promoting equity and accountability in communities.

Effective 2024, California will implement new laws to safeguard employees in relation to marijuana.

Law enforcement agencies are obligated by law to diligently monitor compliance and provide detailed reports on the reasons behind every stop they make.
