Studies Show Bottled Water Contains 100 Times More Plastic Particles Than Previously Thought

The average one-liter plastic bottle of water contains levels of “nanoplastics” that are 100 times higher than previously thought, according to a new study.

A recent study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has shed light on the presence of plastic particles in liter bottles. This groundbreaking research, which focused on particles smaller than 1 micrometer, revealed that these bottles contained an average of 240,000 plastic particles. The findings of this peer-reviewed study provide valuable insights into the extent of plastic pollution in our environment.

Prior research focused solely on the analysis of microplastics, specifically those ranging from 1 to 5,000 micrometers in length.

According to experts, nanoplastics have the potential to pose a significant health risk due to their ability to penetrate cells, enter the bloodstream, and potentially impact organs.

They can also be transmitted to unborn babies through the placenta in pregnant women, potentially causing harm.

“The investigation into the health impacts of nanoplastics is currently at a nascent stage, necessitating further research,” the study’s co-author Beizhan Yan, an environmental chemist at Columbia University, told The Post on Tuesday.

In their study, Yan and lead author Naixin Qian successfully developed a new microscopy technique to detect nanoplastics. This groundbreaking technology has now allowed researchers to confirm the presence of these minuscule particles in bottled water.

A comprehensive analysis was conducted on 25 different brands of 1-liter water bottles using state-of-the-art technology.

The researchers declined to disclose the specific brands they examined, but they discovered a significant number of minuscule plastic fragments in each liter of the tested samples. According to Bloomberg, 90% of these fragments were nanoplastics. The study was covered in their report.

As per the Mayo Clinic, it is recommended that adult men consume approximately 3.7 liters of water daily, while women should aim for 2.7 liters. However, relying solely on water bottled in plastic containers for your daily water intake may expose men to as many as 888,000 plastic particles per day, and women to 648,000 particles.

According to the report, the chemicals known as “plasticizers” or phthalates have a tendency to infiltrate products by permeating through packaging materials.

The report highlighted a range of serious health issues such as cancer, infertility, birth defects, obesity, and more. As a result, there is a growing demand for the government to take action and prohibit the use of phthalates.
